While the existence of mutants is no longer the stuff of urban legends, mutants themselves still face difficulty and danger when they reveal themselves. Charles Xavier had always wanted to help his fellow mutants and also slowly prepare the world for wide scale acceptance of mutantkind. He'd had plans to convert his family mansion for protecting and nurturing young mutants while they learned to control their abilities.



But his telepathy seemed to be draining his vitality as his powers grew in strength. Calling his friend Erik Lehnsherr for help, they turned the mansion into a haven for young mutants disguised as a private school. They began taking in students, teaching them to control their mutations in safety.



But as the threat of mutant dissidents grew and governments grew more fearful of mutants, Erik became increasingly upset with simply standing by and protecting the few mutant children they'd managed to find. Needing a more proactive solution, they began training a team of older students and staff to combat both threats to mutantkind and mutants who threatened humanity.



Dubbed the 'X-Men' (mostly as a half hearted jibe at Xavier), these would be heroes are about to reveal themselves. It should be quite an initiation.
